Mickey Guillory grew up at the
crossroads of State Highway 190 and Rural Route 103 in Mallet,
Louisiana. Mickey learned to love the fun side of making music. Today
he still lends that passionate voice and his fun-loving appreciation to
his music. He was raised in a musically rich environment where as a
teenager Mickey first learned about low down, tail shaking party
music…Zydeco. That accordion and rubboard brings ecstasy to even the
most dispirited person. Living at those crossroads offered Mickey a
means to take his passion further than his rural community. That road
brought him to Houston at 14 and this insightful kid was 17 years old
when he first taught himself to play the “squeezebox” or accordion.
There are few better
live entertainers. Mickey fuels the energy and passion of the crowd by
playing on his knees and even on his back. He picks out people from the
audience to play the rubboard on stage and everyone loves their 15
seconds of fame! After 30 years of playing and touring, he has paid his
dues and forged a special place for himself and his unique blend of
music. He redefines his musical heritage by establishing himself as a
formidable songwriter and an absolutely astonishing entertainer. He is
one of the most sought after artists in Zydeco music today.
His debut release,
"Trouble in Town", hit the streets in early
1995 stunning in its clarity and energy and even more so for the
presence of original songs. Mickey writes from a very different
perspective than many other Zydeco artists. Bon Ton Mickey is inspired
by some of the greatest songwriters of our time, John Delafose,
Buckwheat, Rocking Sydney, Beau Jacques, and last but not least Clifton
Chenier. All had a profound affect on him, thereby making his music
much more fun.
On his second and third
full releases "On Our Way! in 2000" and “Live in Portland” in 2002,
respectively, Mickey evolved to create a fusion of sound like no other.
Fans agree that he is taking his beloved Zydeco music to a new level and
into a larger music world. Bon Ton
traveled to venues in the surrounding areas of Texas, Louisiana,
Virginia, North and South Carolina, Hawaii, Las Vegas, Portland, OR and
ME, Los Angeles, and Seattle. He introduced Zydeco overseas to those in
Europe and Australia which celebrates circles of American roots music.
Join him now at yet
another crossroads where his past and present meet. His musical journey
continues on its own unique course with his 2006 release "Let Me Play
With Your Poodle". He once again offers up an original collection of
first class eclectic sounds making them seem totally fresh with his
Creole language fused into each and every song. Bon Ton Mickey takes
the listener back down to the woods of Louisiana where people still
enjoyed life in spite of their circumstances. The listener tours the
landscape of the sugar cane and potato patches, the exotic flavors of
Creole cooking, the simplicity of life and the colorful celebrations
that make up what is said to be one of the most complex rural
sub-cultures…the Creoles.
